Helping IOT communities save on energy bills
The Albanese Labor Government continues to deliver cost of living relief to families and businesses across the Indian Ocean Territories, through the Energy Bill Relief Fund.
From today, every household will see a $300 credit automatically applied to their electricity bills and eligible small businesses will receive $325 off their bills over 2024–25.
This relief will be directly applied to people’s energy accounts, with the Government to work with territory electricity providers to deliver this support.
In September last year, the Energy Bill Relief Fund was rolled out to non-self-governing territories – the first time residents across Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands could access Commonwealth Government rebates.
This additional support builds on the energy bill rebates already delivered to households ($350) and eligible businesses ($650) across the Indian Ocean Territories – which were automatically credited to bills.
Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Territories, Kristy McBain MP:
“We’re committed to improving the support and services available across the Indian Ocean Territories, which is why we’re delivering this important cost of living relief.
“Until last year, residents across Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands couldn’t access Commonwealth Government rebates – but thanks to the Albanese Labor Government, this important support will continue.”
Quotes attributable to the Federal Member for Lingiari, Marion Scrymgour MP:
“Right across Australia, families are feeling the pinch of high cost-of-living pressures.
“Our most remote communities are no exception, with Christmas and Cocos Islands’ location and distance putting greater pressure on prices.
“I am proud to be part of a government that is putting families first, and are making the responsible decision to provide targeted relief where it matters most.”
