Improving Australia's mail screening at the border

The Albanese Government is modernising Australia’s domestic and international mail screening, inspection and intervention arrangements to ensure they are fit-for-purpose for the modern age.

The Australian Postal Corporation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 will improve security and clarify and improve existing regulatory arrangements so they continue to operate effectively.

The Bill will also future-proof the system against emerging risks, allowing Australia Post and border agencies to adapt their practices as required, and help support people and businesses across Australia

Proposed amendments in the Bill will also ensure that Australia Post and border agencies can more efficiently share relevant information with other agencies and authorities under strict parameters to assist in the performance of their functions and duties during investigative and regulatory activities.

The Bill also makes amendments to the Act to better deal with the forfeiture, disposal and destruction of postal articles or their contents.

Today’s postal network is fundamental to facilitating domestic and international commerce and trade, as well as the importation and exportation of goods to and from Australia, and is being driven by a growing eCommerce sector.

The measures in the Bill were developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders over an extended period, to ensure the measures are operationally fit-for-purpose regardless of further advancements in technology.
