Crews will today start work on the Snowy Mountains Highway between Cooma and Yarrangobilly.

The $6.6 million project is funded by the Albanese and Minns Labor governments under the $36 million Road Safety Program.

The work will take five months to complete and includes: 

• Rehabilitating 1.6 km of pavement
• Widening the highway at Rhine Falls Road to improve turning movements
• Installing 1.5 km of safety barriers
• Upgrading drainage and remove roadside hazards
• Installing about 1 km of barriers, replace three culverts and widen shoulders at Kiandra
• Upgrading 5 km of barriers between Yarrangobilly and Providence Portal
• Installing 750 metres of barriers between Adaminaby and Middlingbank Road.

During this final stage of the work, access to Rhine Falls Road, nearby properties and the informal bus stop will be maintained throughout construction. 

Work will take place on weekdays between 6am and 6pm, with occasional Saturday work between 7am and 4pm. Some work outside of these hours may be required at times and the community will be notified in advance. 

Single lane closures, stop/slow traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during work hours. Motorists should follow the directions of traffic control and allow up to five minutes of extra travel time.
