To the residents of Norfolk Island

I am pleased and proud to have been asked by the Prime Minister to take on the position of Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories.

As former Mayor of a regional council and a small business owner, I understand the challenges and opportunities facing regional and remote communities like Norfolk Island.

My values and passion for supporting regional and remote communities were formed as a teenager when I helped my parents run a sporting goods store in a small, coastal New South Wales town. After meeting my husband in high school, we started our own successful plumbing business, where we employ and support local people.

It is through these experiences that I know first-hand the importance of tourism and local industry to the economy – small, family-run businesses are the backbone of regional communities like Norfolk Island. I am committed to working with peak bodies, tourism providers and local businesses as we plan together what is next for Norfolk Island.

As Minister for Territories, I will join the Member for Bean David Smith as one of your voices in Canberra and I’ll support long-term planning to build a stronger, sustainable and resilient Norfolk Island for the years ahead.

Having lived and worked in – and for – regional Australia throughout my career, I know the importance of stable service delivery and reliable infrastructure. I look forward to working with the Administrator Eric Hutchinson and our partners in Queensland and local government to support and improve long-term service delivery for Norfolk Island. I’m sure that by working together, we can identify innovative, fit-for-purpose and modern solutions that achieve the best outcomes for your community and economy.

I acknowledge the rich history and unique culture of Norfolk Island. I am greatly looking forward to experiencing it personally, and better understanding opportunities to enhance community engagement and cultural recognition.

It is my intention to visit Norfolk Island as soon as possible, to meet with you face-to-face and discuss our shared priorities for your community moving forward. I hope to build strong relationships based on mutual respect and open, transparent communication, so together we can deliver the best outcomes for the community.
