Progressing shipping solutions for Norfolk Island
In line with my priority to improve reliability of shipping and freight, I will return to Norfolk Island on 14 November 2022 to lead an open community forum on shipping solutions.
Since my first visit to Norfolk, where I saw first-hand the impact of freight issues on every aspect of island life and the economy, I have had a wide range of meetings with shipping providers and other stakeholders.
I understand that there is an immediate need for short term shipping solutions and I have been working closely with the Department on measures to stabilise sea freight.
I will share information on these initiatives as discussions with stakeholders and shipping providers progress. In the meantime, we continue to subsidise air freight flights to help address critical shortfalls.
I promised you the Government and my Department would work more closely with Norfolk Island community members on shipping solutions.
As the development of a long-term sustainable shipping plan for Norfolk progresses, we will be engaging with the community through an open dialogue on how best to future-proof sea freight and meet the island’s freight needs going forward.
This will commence with a Have Your Say written submission process, which will open soon.
The Have Your Say will inform the community forum on November 14 where we will have a broad discussion on the future of your shipping.
This is an important opportunity to share the expertise in shipping and freight which Norfolk Islanders have and make it clear what is important to you in freight services.
More information on how to make submissions to the Department’s ‘Have Your Say’ will be available in the next week.
