Federal funding to revitalise the Yass Showground
The Albanese Labor Government’s $1 million commitment towards the restoration of the Yass Showground has taken a major step forward today, with a funding agreement now in place with the Yass Show Society.
This agreement paves the way for works to begin, which will see the grandstand restored to its original state, with significant improvements to be made, including:
- Replacement of the grandstand roof and replacement of the corrugated iron wall sheeting with Colourbond
- Electrical upgrades including installation of lighting
- Installation of two handrails on the stairs and balustrades
- Repair of flooring, seating and landing
- Installation of a reverse cycle air-conditioning to the supper room
The project is being fully funded under the Albanese Government’s Investing in Our Communities Program.
Under this program, the Government is delivering community and sporting infrastructure, open space improvements and other community priorities intended to assist communities to build their strengths and improve liveability.

Quote attributable to Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King:
“This program is about delivering community priorities that assist communities to build on their strengths and improve liveability – and that’s exactly what the Yass Showground grandstand restoration is about.
“This is yet another demonstration of us acting on our commitment to develop Australian communities – including by delivering funding for projects that create jobs, build opportunity and improve liveability.”
Quotes attributable to Federal Member Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain:
“The Yass Show Society and the broader Yass community have been calling for upgrades to the ageing grandstand for many years – which is why I’ve worked hard to advocate for this funding to get these works off the ground.
“Not only will revitalising the grandstand ensure it’s fit-for-purpose into the future, it will go a long way in preserving the show’s rich history and traditions for generations to come.
“Improved grandstand facilities will also support bigger community events – increasing tourism and spending in the Yass Valley.
“I’m so pleased the funding agreement is now locked in thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers, and I can’t wait to see works progress on this fantastic project.”
Quotes attributable to the Yass Show Society President, Anne Hazell:
“With our annual show only 9 days away, it is exciting to be able to share this milestone with our community, visitors to the Yass Valley, and our hard working volunteers who care for the grounds and facilitate the many community events that happen here.
“We are so excited to be able to restore the Grandstand to its former glory, and preserve a part of Yass history that is over 120 years old. We hope future generations will enjoy our efforts. An added bonus is that this project will support local businesses who are going to do the work.
“The Yass showground is not just about our annual show, but hosts many community events, including various fundraisers, miniature horse shows, night markets, charity Christmas lights and family New Year’s Eve parties. When restorations are completed it will provide an enhanced venue for even bigger community events.”
