The Albanese Government has committed $1.7 million to address safety at eight locations under the Northern Territory 2025–26 Black Spot Program funding round.

The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic lights, safety barriers, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings at locations where several serious crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring.

Projects included in this round include:

  • $220,000 to install three pedestrian crossings, widen the intersection and improve lighting and signage on the Gunbalanya internal road intersection.
  • $300,000 to install street lighting along Cox Peninsula Road in front of the Belyuen Community.
  • $230,000 to improve sight lines and construction of traffic islands on approaches along Nightcliff Road and Progress Drive.

The projects were recommended by the Northern Territory Black Spot Consultative Panel. This panel is comprised of local stakeholders who are best placed to ensure nominations of the highest priority and importance to the local community are recommended for approval.

The Black Spot Program provides $150 million annually towards improving road safety at sites across the country.

It is a key part of the Australian Government’s commitment under the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 to reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

Anyone can nominate a Black Spot for consideration, including individuals, community groups and local councils.

“This latest round of Black Spot projects in the Northern Territory will see road safety treatments undertaken at eight sites.

“The Black Spot Program delivers low-cost improvements that have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the risk of serious crashes and fatalities on our roads.

“With our increased funding commitment to this long-running program, I encourage individuals, organisations and local governments to nominate sites in their local communities for consideration in the next funding round.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Solomon and Chair of the Northern Territory Black Spot Consultative Panel, Luke Gosling OAM MP:

“As Chair of the Northern Territory Black Spot Consultative Panel, I am proud to announce these much-needed safety improvements across the Territory. A road user in the NT is four times more likely to die in a road incident than in other parts of Australia.

“These projects have been recommended by those who know our local roads best – members of the public, local councils and road user groups.

“These important works will make our roads safer for all road users including pedestrians.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Lingiari, Marion Scrymgour MP:

“Far too many people have died on Territory roads, and our government does not want to see another family receive the worst news possible. These upgrades will make some of the Territory’s deadliest blackspots safer and I welcome our government’s continued investment in essential community infrastructure across Lingiari.”
