The Albanese Government has committed almost $14 million to address safety at 34 locations under the Western Australia 2026–27 Black Spot Program funding round.

The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic lights, safety barriers, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings at locations where several serious crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring.

Projects funded in this round include:

• $2,198,754 to install a left-turn lane on Wanneroo Road at the signalised intersection with Kingsway in Madeley. 
• $601,750 to install a roundabout, realign carpark access, modify the shared path and pedestrian crossing facilities, resurface the road, and upgrade drainage and street lighting at The Esplanade and William Street in Esperance. 
• $791,200 to install a roundabout and lighting at Lionel Street and Dugan Street in Kalgoorlie. 

The projects were recommended by the Western Australia Black Spot Consultative Panel. This panel is comprised of local stakeholders who are best placed to ensure nominations of the highest priority and importance to the local community are recommended for approval. 

The Black Spot Program provides $150 million annually towards improving road safety at sites across the country. 

It is a key part of the Australian Government’s commitment under the National Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030 to reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

Anyone can nominate a Black Spot for consideration, including individuals, community groups and local councils.
