Willowbank Raceway's $11 million upgrade officially opens

Improvements made at Willowbank Raceway worth $11 million will be officially unveiled today, with the Australian Government fully funding the project.

The site is a popular attraction in the Ipswich area and it has long been recognised that the raceway required renovations. Willowbank hosts 100,000 spectators and 12,000 race competitors each year, and with works now completed, the new facility is open for racers and the wider community to enjoy.

Some of the new features at the raceway include a new 250-metre racing track, 600-metre braking area, an upgraded track exit and improved drainage to the track and surrounding area.

The project also involved renovating five existing amenities facilities, adding six new multi-function demountable buildings, as well as constructing a new effluent management system.

Track lighting and electrical upgrades were also installed, including two electrical boards, 27 new lighting poles and new track lighting.

Ongoing operations of the raceway is set to generate a further $7.86 million in economic activity thanks to these works.

The project supported 229 direct and indirect jobs during construction, while creating another eight ongoing jobs.

“These upgrades will ensure the vast number of race competitors and spectators the Willowbank Raceway attracts can safely enjoy the over 100 events that take place each year at the venue.

“This project is another demonstration of the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to provide new and enhanced infrastructure in major growth areas that boosts local economies and helps communities thrive.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann:

“It’s great news that the Australian Government funded upgrade of Willowbank Raceway has been completed in time for this month’s Winternationals and Festival of Horsepower events.

“This funding is generating jobs and economic growth for the Ipswich region, and will help the raceway to continue to attract thousands of people to world-class events very year.

“Ipswich people love their motorsport and Willowbank Raceway has been contributing to the local community since 1980s. These vital upgrades will ensure it remains Australia’s top drag strip destination for years to come.”
