Works begin on safer junction at South Brighton

Work has commenced to upgrade the Brighton Road and Edwards Street junction at South Brighton (in Adelaide's southwest), improving road safety and public transport efficiency.

The project includes the installation of traffic lights with a signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossing which will enhance road safety and accessibility for all road users.

It is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, and will support approximately 20 jobs over the construction period.

The funding is part of the $30 million Brighton Road Intersection Improvements project.

A dedicated right-turn lane will be installed on Edwards Street so drivers can easily access the Brighton Central Shopping Centre, improving access to local businesses along Brighton Road, especially during peak periods.

For those who catch public transport, bus stop 37 (west) on Brighton Road will be relocated just north of the junction and a new bus stop 37 (east) will be installed south of the junction.

Further improvements to the junction will include upgraded LED lighting, new kerbing and gutters, resurfaced road pavement and new line marking.

Following community consultation, the Pedestrian Actuated Crossing on Brighton Road, south of Gregory Street, will be retained.

The majority of the works are being undertaken on weeknights between 7pm and 6am, with Edwards Street requiring some temporary closures in place throughout the works.

Speed and lane restrictions will also be in place, however pedestrian access and access to local businesses will be maintained at all times.

The works are expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2024.
