SEQ City Deal Implementation Plan launched

The Albanese and Palaszczuk governments along with the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (SEQ) have today released the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal Implementation Plan – a joint pathway to deliver $1.8 billion worth of projects to support one of the fastest growing regions in the country.

The Deal will deliver a lasting legacy for South East Queensland with a significant package of initiatives generating thousands of local jobs, boosting digital and transport connectivity, supporting the local environment, enhancing liveability and creating thriving communities.

The Deal will help one of Australia’s fastest growing regions cater for its booming population and complement investment in the world’s biggest sporting event – the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The launch of the Implementation Plan enables key projects in the Deal to progress to their next phases, including:

  • The $285.8 million SEQ Liveability Fund to deliver projects that support liveable and healthy communities;
  • The $105 million resource recovery infrastructure to progress the region to a circular economy;
  • $70 million for telecommunications infrastructure and improved digital connectivity;
  • $40 million for Resilient Rivers to improve the health of the region’s waterways, rivers and Moreton Bay
  • $45 million for infrastructure in the Loganlea-Meadowbrook Precinct.

The Implementation Plan provides detail on how all commitments will support high-quality connectivity and community infrastructure to create a sustainable region that is connected locally and competing globally.

Quotes attributable to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“The Australian Government is working closely with state and local government partners to deliver meaningful projects and actions, ensuring our planning and investment come together to provide the best outcomes for the communities of SEQ.

This partnership builds on the Australian Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life of Australians living in our cities and suburbs.

“This partnership will support the region’s booming population and complement broader work to deliver a successful Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Quotes attributable to Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles:

“South East Queensland is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, with 5.4 million people expected to call this region home by 2041,” Mr Miles said.

“We have a world-class lifestyle and a strong economy that supports plenty of opportunities - and we want to keep it that way for generations to come.

“The SEQ City Deal implementation plan ensures we have three levels of government working together to unleash the region’s potential and cements its economic future.

“It will put into motion a long-term vision for the infrastructure needed to put SEQ on the global stage, create good jobs and build more connected and liveable communities.

“We want to uphold the unique attributes and character of the region while setting the right conditions that maximise the benefits of growth.

“The City Deal will also support the lasting benefits SEQ will experience before and after the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, setting the region up with key infrastructure that will sustain us for decades.”

Quotes attributable to Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner:

“This deal demonstrates the important cooperation needed between all levels of government to address the growing pressures on the south-east.

“We’re experiencing significant population growth which is placing pressure on our region’s housing and affordability, our environment, transport networks and lifestyle.

“This Deal puts us on a path to manage long-term population growth and to deliver the best-ever Games and, importantly, improve the lives of all of our residents.

"It delivers a foundation investment in our environment and waterways, community infrastructure and critical planning that will support the future of our region as we continue to grow.

“Since signing the Deal we’ve seen work continue on projects like the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, and we’re excited to see funding to progress many of the other initiatives outlined in the Implementation Plan.

“We’re keen to get on with delivering these outcomes and look forward to continuing to work closely with industry and the other levels of government to empower the SEQ City Deal to deliver the needs of our rapidly growing region over the next two-decades.”
