Bruce boasts seven new overtaking lanes between Bowen and Ayr

Seven new overtaking lanes have been completed on the Bruce Highway between Bowen and Ayr, on Queensland’s north coast, to improve road safety and efficiency.

The lanes, including four northbound and three southbound, have increased the number of safe overtaking opportunities along sections of this 115-kilometre stretch, reducing travel times and improving traffic flow.

The projects also delivered safety improvements such as widening the road, installing wide centre line treatments, and removing roadside hazards at four locations including West Euri to Abbott Point Road, Armstrong Creek, Aaron Creek to Slater Creek, and Plain Creek.

The upgrade was delivered via four projects totalling $42.39 million and fully funded by the Australian Government under the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program – Overtaking Lanes Package.

Quotes attributable to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“Every day, strong progress is being made to deliver the largest road infrastructure program Queensland has ever seen through the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program (BHUP).

“The Bruce Highway between Bowen and Ayr provides tourist and industrial access from south-east Queensland and the southern states to tourist attractions, industries and port facilities in northern Queensland.

“This section of the highway carries over 3,500 vehicles per day, including trucks, cars and buses.

“Given this significant number and the mixed use of the highway, the introduction of seven more overtaking lanes will greatly support safer and more efficient travel for all those using the Bruce Highway between Bowen and Ayr.”

Quotes attributable to Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey:

“The Queensland Government is determined to improve road safety and constructing another seven overtaking lanes on a busy stretch of the Bruce Highway between Bowen and Ayr will deliver benefits for years to come.

“In delivering these overtaking lanes, a number of options were investigated to identify the preferred locations and widening approach, and to confirm and appropriately treat roadside hazards.

“The new overtaking lanes will actively improve safety and efficiency on the Bruce Highway between these two great towns by providing more opportunities for motorists to safely pass slow moving vehicles, reducing driver frustration.

“The lanes are an example of the better services being built in Queensland to improve connectivity across our great state.

“We thank motorists for their patience while these projects were completed.”
