$2 billion toll free road flying along

A new toll-free motorway for easy connection to the future Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport has reached a major construction milestone, with work now underway for a year.

The new 16-kilometre road is on track to open in 2026 and is a $2 billion investment in Western Sydney being funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments.

Expected to carry 52,000 vehicles per day by 2036, the new road will have connectivity via Elizabeth Drive to the east and The Northern Road to the west.

Current works are being delivered by contractors Seymour Whyte along the central section and CPB-Georgiou Group Joint Venture through the western section of the future motorway with more than 2000 people being directly or indirectly employed.

Major construction on the M12 will be complete prior to the opening of the new Western Sydney International Airport in 2026.

Quotes attributable to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“The M12 is an important part of the $4.4 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and is jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing over $1.6 billion to the project.

“This road is an essential part of the strategy to ensure Western Sydney International Airport enjoys good transport connections from the outset.

“It is also an important part of a wider plan to ensure those connections help the surrounding areas to encourage future employment opportunities as the  Western Parkland City grows.”

Quotes attributable to NSW Roads Minister John Graham:

“It’s exciting to see construction well underway, with road grading works taking place, culverts and bridges being constructed and complex interchanges starting to take shape.

“To understand why this road is essential to the success of the new airport you need to remember it will take more than a quarter of an hour off the journey if you were to use the existing road network which is primarily Elizabeth Drive.

“It has also been built to accommodate future freight movements and growing economic zones such as the Aerotropolis and employment zones stretching from Liverpool to Erskine Park and beyond.

“Importantly, the M12 will also take traffic off Elizabeth Drive, giving the road back to the local communities that rely on it for their day to day needs.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for New South Wales Tony Sheldon:

“This road expands the benefits of the Western Sydney International Airport beyond the airport itself to better link with Western Sydney communities.

“This project will see connectivity and road linkages match the facility and demand of the Western Sydney International Airport’s passenger and freight transport requirements.”
