Boom gates going in South Geelong

The dangerous and congested level crossing on Fyans Street in South Geelong will soon be a thing of the past, improving safety and traffic flow for the more than 14,000 vehicles that use the road each day.

New designs have been released that will see the boom gates removed and the five-way roundabout at Fyans Street simplified, as part of the Australian and Victorian governments’ South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication.

The current intersection includes boom gates in the middle of the roundabout, making it one of South Geelong’s most notorious intersections.

With more trains set to run more often, the level crossing needs to be removed to ensure safety of motorists, pedestrians and passengers.

The new design is based on community feedback and will ensure greater separation between the Carr Street residential area and the industrial area south of Fyans Street. It will also provide a new path along Carr Street linking pedestrians and cyclists to the Bellarine Rail Trail.

Updated designs for the South Geelong Station upgrade feature improvements to the car park to make it safer and more accessible for passengers, in addition to the second platform and new accessible overpass.

Locals can provide feedback on the updated design to help inform the final designs for the project.

Major works are set to begin later this year, with the project to be completed in late 2024.

The project will duplicate around eight kilometres of track from South Geelong Station to Breakwater Road, and between Marshalltown Road and Waurn Ponds Station.

It will boost reliability and enable five train services per hour during peak times and three per hour between the peaks for Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations.

The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication is part of the Australian and Victorian governments’ $1 billion investment in the staged upgrade of the Geelong Line.
