Delivering safer journeys along Mickleham Road
The Australian and Victorian governments will invest $219 million to upgrade Mickleham Road in Greenvale – improving safety and travel time for thousands of motorists in Melbourne’s growing north.
Mickleham Road currently carries around 25,000 vehicles per day and this number is forecast to increase due to the rapid growth in the area. This vital upgrade will reduce congestion and make it safer for people to drive, cycle and walk along Mickleham Road.
In a boost for the local economy, Stage 1 of the upgrade will create up to 420 new jobs, including 134 direct and 286 indirect jobs.
Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade will involve:
- building extra lanes in each direction on Mickleham Road between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard
- adding new traffic lights at the Aitken College intersection
- replacing the roundabout at Somerton Road and Mickleham Road with a new traffic light intersection, including priority bus lanes
- upgrading the Hillview Road and Dellamore Boulevard intersections
- building new sections of walking and cycling path to improve connectivity along Mickleham Road.
The project includes funding to build extra lanes and upgrade key intersections between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard, and to progress planning for a potential future upgrade of Mickleham Road between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road.
It will also complement works already underway in the North, including the Craigieburn Road Upgrade which will add lanes in each direction and signalised intersection upgrades between Mickleham Road and the Hume Highway.
It follows the recent completion of the M80 Ring Road Upgrade between Edgars and Sydney roads, which has improved journeys for more than 165,000 motorists every day.
