2023 a year of progress for T2D project
Significant progress was made on the North-South Corridor – Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project in 2023, preparing the project for a critically important 2024.
More than 700 boreholes over 18 kilometres have been drilled to date as part of ground investigation works to help inform the detailed design of the tunnels and lowered motorway.
More than five kilometres of utility service relocations have been completed, clearing the way for main construction to start.
Procurement for the main construction works started in January 2023, with two consortia shortlisted to deliver the project and the successful consortia to be announced in the third quarter of 2024.
Construction of the Tonsley East substation – to be built, owned and run by SA Power Networks – started in March 2023 and will be completed in early 2024.
This facility will constitute part of the project’s southern laydown area and will supply electricity to the tunnel boring machines and the two parallel 4.5-kilometre-long Southern Tunnels once they are completed in 2030.
More than three kilometres of South Road in both directions have been resurfaced between Bennet Avenue, Melrose Park and Glengarry Avenue, Glandore, with the section from Rothesay Avenue to Lloyd Street, St Marys to be completed in late January 2024.
Resurfacing works along South Road involve removing the existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt to ensure long-term safety and integrity of these sections ahead of the start of main construction works.
The first two of five interim noise walls along an 850-metre section of York Avenue, Clovelly Park have been installed, with the remaining three walls to be installed by the end of 2024.
More interim noise walls will be installed in other areas along the project alignment to help minimise any potential noise impacts for local residents and businesses.
The pedestrian crossing outside Black Forest Primary School has been upgraded, providing greater protection for pedestrians, including school children, waiting to cross the road.
Concrete barriers and steel crash cushions have been installed to replace the old pedestrian fence, while the pedestrian ramp has also been upgraded.
Works will begin in 2024 to relocate Warriappendi School to bigger and better premises and the Torrensville Bowling Club to a new standalone home.
The project also opened a new dedicated central Community Information Centre at 290 South Road, Hilton, which can host large information sessions and one-on-one meetings for interested stakeholders, with a range of interactive tools to help people further understand the project.
