Fatality Free Friday shows the road towards Vision Zero

Road safety is a shared responsibility.

We are all responsible for ourselves and others on the roads.

The Australian Road Safety Foundation’s national campaign, Fatality Free Friday, launching on Friday May 3, is a reminder of this critical message.

The ARSF campaign will run throughout the month of May, culminating in a National Day of Action on the 31st of May.

Fatality Free Friday is more than just a target of no fatalities for a single day – it is a demonstration that if we can be safe on our roads for one day, we can do it every day.

Ahead of Fatality Free Friday the drivers are being reminded to be careful on our roads. In the year to March, Australia’s road toll has climbed to 1,286 people.

That’s 1,286 avoidable deaths - hundreds of families and loved ones missing someone.

The Albanese Government is committed to working with all levels of government to reduce Australia’s road toll and work towards Vision Zero.

We are spending more than $90 billion dollars over the next ten years on road and rail projects under the Infrastructure Investment Program

We are also putting significant extra funding into local roads, with increases in a number of programs such as an extra $250 million for the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

In addition, we are progressively increasing Roads to Recovery funding so that it doubles to $1 billion a year and increasing Black Spot funding from $110 million to $150 million a year.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown:

“The Albanese Government asks all road users to prioritise safety on and around our roads.

“Fatality Free Friday is about demonstrating that if we all take care and pay attention on our roads we can collectively bring our road toll down.

“Road safety affects all Australians each and every day.

“Plan your journeys ahead and allow extra time for possible delays.

“Deaths on our roads are not just a statistic; they are someone's parent, child, sibling, colleague, or cherished friend.

"Don’t be reckless behind the wheel – pay attention, buckle up, do not drink and drive, do not speed, and don’t take risks on our roads. It just isn’t worth it.

“Together, we can keep our roads safe for everyone.”
