Regional communities get major boost from Federal Budget

Media Release

14 May 2014

Regional and local communities across Australia will benefit from the Government's $1.3 billion commitment to community projects that improve their infrastructure, economy and quality of life.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the budget confirmed the Coalition's pre-election promise of $1 billion to a new National Stronger Regions Fund.

“We promised it, and we have kept that promise, committing the funds to provide $200 million a year from July 2015,” Mr Truss said.

“This funding will support priority projects which create jobs and support economic growth in regional Australia—without a mining tax.

“From mid next year, the fund will enable councils and community groups to apply for grants between $20,000 and $10 million, to meet up to half the cost of suitable community building projects.

“The budget also confirms $314.2 million allocated to local projects by the Coalition during the election campaign to help create strong, secure and viable communities. This funding also revives projects Labor's failed mining tax left in limbo—unfunded and uncontracted.

“The funding of almost 300 projects through the Community Development Grants Programme will benefit the various communities in the long term, and will create jobs during construction.

“We said we wouldn't leave regional projects in limbo, and we haven't… as the budget proves.

“The Australian Government is committed to investing in high-quality infrastructure which will drive strong economic benefits across our regional areas, as well as our major cities, and to regional roads that will link to the national transport network.

“We are ambitious about Australia's future and while that means big money spent on big budgetary items like highways and rail lines, it also means infrastructure that is important to the fabric of regional and local communities.”

Mr Truss said the Community Development Grants Programme was providing between $2,000 and $13 million to projects that covered a wide range of community needs, such as men's sheds, neighbourhood centres, sports facilities, museums and town centre revitalisation.

“Currently 294 projects are being processed. That's 294 communities gaining a social and economic boost, with the benefits generally flowing on to the surrounding region,” he said.

“This programme is administered by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, which undertakes a value for money assessment of each project against the programme guidelines. The Nationals Stronger Regions Fund will be similarly administered by the Department.

A full list of projects currently being processed under the Community Development Grants Programme is attached.
