Motorists in Western Sydney are now benefiting from improved road connections with the first stage of the Narellan Road upgrade open to traffic.

Minister for Major Projects, Territories and Local Government Paul Fletcher said the Australian and NSW governments are surging ahead with plans to revitalise road infrastructure in one of Australia's fastest growing regions.

“Stage one of the $114 million Narellan Road upgrade between Narellan and Campbelltown has been delivered on time and is open to traffic,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Narellan Road has been widened to six lanes and a series of traffic lights has been installed to reduce traffic congestion, prevent delays and improve access to the TAFE and Western Sydney University education hub.”

New South Wales Minister for Roads Duncan Gay said the Narellan Road project provided great opportunities for local businesses, with more than $15 million worth of contracts already awarded to Western Sydney businesses and suppliers.

“Construction on this project has provided more job opportunities for people in the local community, which will continue to increase as work ramps up on the next stage,” Mr Gay said.

“Once complete this major arterial corridor will provide significant benefits for people living in nearby communities including Campbelltown, Mount Annan, Camden and Narellan.

“A new Incident Response Facility has been built to allow crews to immediately respond to accidents on the Hume Motorway and surrounding areas.

“This means incidents in the area can be addressed faster and traffic returned to normal sooner.”

Work on Stage 2 is underway and is expected to be completed in 2018.
