NSW Minister for Small Business

The Australian Government today announced the appointment of a new Chair to the Regional Development Australia (RDA) Northern Rivers Committee for a three-year term.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash and New South Wales Minister for Regional Development John Barilaro said they were delighted with the appointment of the Hon Don Page, former member of the NSW Parliament for Ballina, as the new Chair of the Committee.

Senator Nash said that the RDA committees play a key role in growing stronger regions across the nation and ensure that all three tiers of government work together.

“These committees advise on priority activities that have the potential to unlock regional economic development and improve the productivity of their regions,” Senator Nash said.

“RDA committees provide advice to the Government on critical issues affecting each region and are an important mechanism to increase access to Australian Government programmes in their communities.

“The committees also assist local community stakeholders to develop project proposals and direct them to appropriate public and/or private funding sources—including the $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund.

“Don's many years of experience and understanding of the roles of all three tiers of government will help further the work of the RDA Northern Rivers Committee in delivering their regional plan.”

Mr Barilaro said Mr Page's appointment to the committee will support the RDA in its role to provide advice on economic development opportunities in the region.

“Don held the North Coast seat of Ballina for over 25 years as well positions of Minister for Local Government and Minister for the North Coast, bringing a wealth of experience to the RDA Northern Rivers Committee. I am confident in his ability to deliver for the North Coast region,” Mr Barilaro said.

“I would like to thank retiring Chair, Mr John Walker, for his leadership and contribution to the Northern Rivers community through the work of the RDA Northern Rivers.”

Regional Development Australia consists of a national network of 55 committees designed to focus on regional economic development and facilitate local projects that aim to make a difference in their local communities.
