Almost 1,000 jobs for Gilmore thanks to major regional funding boost

Media Release

21 February 2018

Joint release with:

Ann Sudmalis

Federal Member for Gilmore

  • Successful projects in the Gilmore electorate announced under the Regional Jobs and Investment Packages
  • The $220 million initiative is designed to stimulate job creation and investment in regional Australia
  • Twenty-three projects will be delivered across the Gilmore electorate creating almost 1,000 jobs

Local businesses in the electorate of Gilmore and across the NSW South Coast are set for a major economic boost, with the Coalition Government's Regional Jobs and Investment Package (RJIP) expected to create up to 1000 new jobs across the region.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the initiative was part of the Coalition Government's commitment to drive economic growth and job creation in Australia's regions—backing local businesses, their workers and their families.

“A range of high-quality, potential initiatives were identified through an extensive assessment process paired with community input—resulting in locally driven decisions, delivering 23 job creating projects along the NSW South Coast,” Dr McVeigh said.

“The Coalition delivered 42,000 new jobs in regional New South Wales last year. We understand the benefits that flow from greater employment opportunities and that's why it is very pleasing to see that this announcement will help generate more than 350 jobs during construction and nearly 640 ongoing jobs.

“The Coalition stands for more and better paying jobs—this package will deliver up to 1,000 jobs for the NSW South Coast community from Berry down to Moruya.

“This means 1,000 families across the region confidently spending and investing more in their local community,” Dr McVeigh said.

“We're focussed on delivering a strong economy and thanks to this package, we have been able to partner with the private sector to deliver almost $55 million to the local economy, which means more spending, more opportunities and of course, more jobs.

“I must commend Ann Sudmalis for her tireless advocacy in driving this program forward. There is no greater advocate in Canberra for their local community than the Member for Gilmore.”

Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis said more than 60 applications were received for the pilot program, highlighting the importance of this initiative to local communities in supporting business and strengthening the economy.

“Thanks to almost $3 million through the package, the Cottee Group will be able to expand their current facility, enhancing competitiveness and processing capacity, which will help springboard more world-class produce from the paddocks of the South Coast to the kitchens' dining rooms and lunch boxes across the nation,” Ms Sudmalis said.

“The Cottee Family has been a bedrock of the South Coast for more than five generations, this support allows the business to maintain its competitiveness and celebrate its long and successful history.

“Others include a state-of-the-art shellfish hatchery, an in-country LM-STAR Avionics Automated Test System to maintain the Australian Air Force's F35 Lightning aircraft, and a range of tourism projects—combined will provide hundreds of new jobs and a stronger economy across the region for years to come.

“The South Coast is a major tourism draw card, with immense opportunities. The Coalition is backing the New South Wales South Coast to confidently continue to grow and prosper.

“Jobs and growth is not just a slogan its happening.”
