Tweed, Murwillumbah big winners in regional funding round

The Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah regions will benefit from more than $1 million in Federal funding, with support for the Tweed Heads Civic, Cultural Centre Plaza and Social Enterprise Café and Murwillumbah Town Centre Revitalisation Project announced under the Building Better Regions Fund today.
Touring the region today, Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals' Leader Michael McCormack said the projects are a significant investment in building a stronger economy and creating more jobs.
“Around regional Australia the Liberal and Nationals' Government is focused on building strong and resilient regional communities with the services and infrastructure locals deserve,” Mr McCormack said.
“We have delivered in regional funding for communities big and small around the nation, and the recent Federal Budget commited yet another $200 million to another round of the important Building Better Regions Fund.”
The Tweed Heads Civic, Cultural Centre Plaza and Social Enterprise Café will receive $563,910 to build an outdoor ampitheatre, while the Murwillumbah Town Centre Revitalisation Project has been allocated $500,000 towards the build of a new entry plaza, refurbished bus shelter, amenities block and upgraded associated infrastructure in and around Knox Park.
The Nationals' Senator for New South Wales John Williams said the investment will help create local jobs during construction and improve communty facilities.
“This will have major flow-on benefits across the community including during construction, as well as providing an important community asset to Tweed Heads and tourism benefits in Murwillumbah, ensuring the region will continue to thrive and prosper into the future,” Senator Williams said.
“The funding announced today will ensure these projects become a reality”.
Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the projects will deliver significant economic and social benefits to the community.
“Under round two of the Building Better Regions Fund—Infrastructure Projects stream, the Liberal and Nationals' Government is investing more than $200 million in 136 projects with a total leveraged project value of $459 million,” Dr McVeigh said.
“This means, in each successful community much anticipated local projects are receiving the funds needed to take a big idea and make it a reality.
“The Liberals and Nationals have a plan for regional Australia and we are focused on getting it done. It's a plan to create more jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities”.
The second round of the Building Better Regions Fund, which includes the Community Investments stream and the Infrastructure Projects stream, is expected to create some 10,000 jobs from more 240 projects around Australia.
