More funding for communities to address the impacts of drought
The Australian Government is continuing to support regions doing it tough, with over $1 million being shared among 27 community-based projects under the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal’s award-winning Tackling Tough Times Together program.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the latest round of funding will help regions meet their current and future needs.
“Many regional and rural communities continue to address the devastating impacts of drought and require support to deliver projects which will reduce social isolation, develop leadership skills, address disadvantage and stimulate local economic recovery,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“Even though some parts of the country have received significant rainfall, the impacts of the extended dry periods and prolonged rainfall shortages are still prevalent and problematic.
“Coupled with the additional stress and challenges caused by COVID-19, and the ongoing effects from last year’s bushfires, it makes our $15 million investment since all the more vital.
“We are pleased to be providing funding to several towns such as Roma, Jamestown, Moora and Moulamein during these difficult financial and stressful times.”
Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said a number of successful projects will enhance community wellbeing and strengthen the local economy.
“This includes providing a piano for the local choir and wider community in Kempsey (NSW), installing children’s play equipment in Texas (QLD) and undertaking building repairs at Milang Museum (SA),” Minister Littleproud said.
“Applications for the next round of the Tackling Tough Times Together program are currently open and I strongly encourage drought-affected areas across remote, rural and regional Australia to apply.”
