Great Western Highway safety upgrade through Mount Victoria village now open

  • The 1.6 kilometre stretch has been upgraded to improve safety and traffic flows
  • $34.1 million upgrade completed in time for Easter long weekend
  • Project funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments

Motorists are enjoying a smoother and safer journey between the Blue Mountains and Lithgow following the opening of an upgraded 1.6 kilometre section of the Great Western Highway through Mount Victoria village.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said the completed works included upgrading nine intersections to improve safety and traffic flows on this particularly busy section of the highway.

“This is an exciting day for the thousands of motorists who travel through Mount Victoria village each day and it is particularly pleasing to see that the upgraded stretch has been opened in time to deal more effectively with the large traffic volumes expected over the Easter long weekend,” Mr McCormack said.

“There are now dedicated right-turn bays at Harley Avenue, Mount Piddington Road, Kanimbla Valley Road and Selsdon Street, as well as a dedicated left-turn bay at Mount York Road.”

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the highway's shoulders had been widened by up to three metres on each side to improve traffic flows at village intersections.

“Workers are continuing to finalise minor works such as landscaping but the good news is the highway through the village is now open to traffic,” Mrs Pavey said.

“The community and motorists are asked to continue exercising patience while these minor works are being completed.”

The Great Western Highway safety upgrade through Mount Victoria village was jointly funded with the Australian Government contributing $29.6 million and the New South Wales government contributing $4.5 million.

The project is part of the Australian and New South Wales governments' jointly funded $250 million Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow.
