Esperance Jetty officially opened

The Esperance Jetty was officially opened today with dignitaries, community members and visitors from across the state gathering at the Jetty Headland to celebrate the historic occasion.

Rick Wilson MP, Member for O’Connor officially opened the Jetty on behalf of the Australian Government, which contributed $4 million to the project through the Building Better Regions Fund. “I understood how important this project was to the community both socially and economically and fought hard to ensure the funds were secured to enable this project to go ahead on behalf of the Esperance community.”

“Many memories were attached to the Tanker Jetty over its 80-year lifespan and I’m certain many more happy memories will be created on the new jetty. This project supported 23 jobs in construction, creates many ongoing jobs after completion and used local businesses and supplies. Along with the huge tourism draw card a jetty is to a coastal community, this project will help bring economic prosperity to Esperance for many years to come” said Mr Wilson.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government’s $4,000,000 investment in community infrastructure would provide long term benefits to the Esperance region.

“Delivering locally significant projects is at the heart of the Building Better Regions Fund, which is why replacing the 80-year-old Esperance Tanker Jetty that closed in 2015 was such a crucial project for us,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Esperance Shire President Ian Mickel said the official opening was a momentous occasion, “It was fantastic to see so many people gathered to celebrate the occasion. We have been waiting a long time for a new jetty and today is the day we can finally all celebrate its completion. Today we as a community celebrated our bright future and remembered our storied past” he said.

Cr Mickel also said, “The Tanker Jetty was a big part of life in the town and its loss was felt by many but today we opened our fantastic new jetty and turned a page in Esperance’s history book. This achievement is something we can all be truly proud of.”
