Listening to the IOT communities on fish rules

Further community engagement on proposed changes to fishing rules in the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) of Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) will take place in the next fortnight.

During my recent visit to the CKI, I heard the community’s concerns about the proposed new fishing rules. In response, I asked the Administrator, Mrs Natasha Griggs, to lead an additional round of consultation on CI and CKI, supported by Alex Foulds from the Department and WA Fisheries.

The consultations will take place on CKI from 5-8 November and on CI from 8-12 November 2019.

Everybody is welcome to arrange a meeting.

I wish to ensure the views of as many people as possible feed into this consultation process. This will provide an opportunity to discuss the consultations undertaken to date, and how your feedback has been taken into account. Scientific evidence will also be presented.

It will also allow any remaining key issues to be identified and resolved.

Individuals or small groups who wish to meet with the officials can make an appointment through the Office of the Administrator. Following these consultations, I will come back to you, the community, on what I have heard and next steps.

To arrange to meet with Mrs Griggs and the officials, please contact the Office of the Administrator via david.eizenberg@infrastructure.gov.au by 3pm local time on Tuesday, 5 November for CKI and by 3pm local time on Thursday, 7 November for CI.
