Strategic plan outlines Cocos (Keeling) Islands vision to 2030

Media Release

SL010/2019

03 April 2019

I congratulate the Indian Ocean Territories Regional Development Organisation and its Chair, Mrs Natasha Griggs, the Administrator of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, on the release of the Our Cocos (Keeling) Islands 2030 Strategic Plan.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are among the most beautiful and remote islands in Australia. The islands have a strong and proud history as the site of Australia's first naval victory in World War I, and the courageous 1984 vote on self-determination.

The Strategic Plan provides a roadmap to maximise community wellbeing and build a prosperous, sustainable and diverse future for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. It will support deeper regional connections to the broader Indian Ocean Territories, northern Australia and our Southeast Asian neighbours.

The Coalition Government funded the development of this Plan, as well as the Our Christmas Island 2030 Strategic Plan, which was released in December 2018. Both Strategic Plans provide a community-led pathway to a bright and sustainable future for the Indian Ocean Territories.

Both Plans have a strong focus on community, economic development, and maintaining the pristine environment of the islands. They also focus on education, social harmony, building tourism and creating jobs. Extensive consultation with the communities of the Indian Ocean Territories has made these Strategic Plans a reality, and I am very pleased with the comprehensive, holistic and strategic foundation the Plans will provide for the future.

The Regional Development Organisation and the Administrator will lead delivery of the initiatives in the Strategic Plans. The Coalition Government is committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders to help realise your bright future.

Again, I wholeheartedly congratulate the Regional Development Organisation and Mrs Griggs on the release of the Our Cocos (Keeling) Islands 2030 Strategic Plan and am excited it has been delivered ahead of the 35th anniversary of self-determination.

Thank you to you, the community, for engaging with the development of both the Cocos (Keeling) and Christmas Island Plans, and for sharing your vision for the future.
