Keeping the Norfolk Island Community Updated
22 December 2018
As Christmas rapidly approaches I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm season’s greeting to everyone and best wishes for a prosperous and happy New Year.
In recent news, on 17 December 2018, the Australian Government announced its commitment to resealing the Norfolk Island Airport runway and apron. This is a significant project and we will continue to work in consultation with the Council to progress work (including the value of the project). This, of course, will be subject to negotiations and a transparent tender process.
I am also pleased to advise that the Governor-General has appointed an additional judge, the Honourable Justice Steven Rares, to the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island. Justice Rares has been a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia since 2006 and is an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. The wealth of experience in the fields of civil, commercial and criminal law Justice Rares brings, will benefit the Norfolk Island community and justice system.
I would like to remind you that, from 2 January 2019, people on Norfolk Island will be able to apply for Vocational Education and Training (VET) financial support. This will make it easier and more affordable for you to access vocational training. There is a separate ad in today’s paper inviting anyone interested in VET to an initial information session in January.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or a particular matter you would like an update on, please contact the Administrator’s office.
Once again, I wish you all a safe and happy festive season surrounded by loved ones.
