New Administrator for Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Media Release

22 September 2014

Today I am pleased to announce that Mr Barry Haase will be appointed as the Administrator of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

The three year appointment, to commence on 5th October 2014, will be officially made by the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), on 1st October.

Mr Haase has previously represented regional and remote areas across Western Australia as federal member for Kalgoorlie and for Durack, and has held several shadow Parliamentary Secretary positions.

Mr Haase will bring a wealth of experience to the position and is well qualified to represent the interests of the island communities.

This experience in government will be a strong foundation to help Mr Haase improve governance arrangements for Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, boost economic development and support the local island communities.

The Australian Government recognises the unique needs of the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) and is committed to supporting the region’s long term economic prosperity.

Our $1.4 million commitment under the IOT Community Development Grants Programme towards 31 community infrastructure projects across the region will strengthen economic development, increase productivity, create local jobs and improve the islands’ liveability.

The Government is committed to ensuring the community continues to inform this process through both the Administrator and other community groups.

I would like to thank outgoing Administrator Mr Jon Stanhope for his work as the Commonwealth representative on the Islands since 2012.
