Revised air schedule for Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Media Release

JB087/2014

01 September 2014

After recent community consultation and feedback, today I am pleased to release a revised operating flight schedule for the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands which delivers additional benefits and greater certainty for passengers.

Flights with increased baggage capacity will fly between Perth, Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, reducing the risk of baggage offload.

The flight schedule will be revised to better reflect demand on the routes and, while the days of the week and times for each service are to be confirmed, the proposed schedule consists of:

  • one A320 service Perth-Christmas-Perth each week;
  • one A320 service Perth-Christmas-Cocos (Keeling) Islands-Perth each week;
  • one A320 service Perth-Cocos (Keeling) Islands-Christmas Island-Perth each week; and,
  • one weekly freighter service.

Flight schedule changes will not lead to any additional cost increases, and current arrangements regarding accommodation for any disruption to services will remain in place.

Medevac flights will also not be affected by these changes.

Community members will continue to be able to access the Patient Assistance Travel Scheme where appropriate.

New air arrangements are expected to commence on 1 January 2015 after the Sydney Emden 100 Year Anniversary event, ensuring participants already booked on flights for this important event are not affected.

Arrangements will be reviewed annually to ensure air services are working effectively for the community.

I would like to thank Virgin Australia for the manner in which they have worked with the Australian Government to achieve a better outcome for the community.

Virgin Australia staff will be working hard to ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements. For more information on the current or revised schedule contact the Virgin Australia Customer Support Line on 13 67 89.
