Media Release

30 October 2014

Joint release with:

Adam Giles

NT Chief Minister

Today Mr John Laurence Hardy OAM was appointed as the 21st Administrator of the Northern Territory by His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor-General of Australia.

Mr Hardy is a well-known and respected Northern Territory businessman who has made a huge contribution to the community over the years.

Mr Hardy has lived in the Northern Territory for over 40 years, initially working as a pilot, then as a radiographer at the Darwin Hospital.

He later returned to the aviation industry, establishing Air North in 1978 and Hardy Aviation in 1991. Hardy Aviation is now one of the Territory's biggest airlines.

Mr Hardy and his wife Marie will both be stepping aside from their roles as Directors of Hardy Aviation to give their full attention to the role of Administrator of the Northern Territory.

The Australian Government is committed to building a stronger and more prosperous economy and Mr Hardy will be a strong advocate for more jobs and growth in the Northern Territory.

Mr Hardy has been an avid supporter of various community organisations, including the Government House Foundation, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and the Darwin Chorale, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Darwin.

We look forward to him taking up the role and representing the people of the Northern Territory over the next two years.

Mr Hardy replaces the Honourable Sally Thomas AM, who was appointed as the Territory's first female Administrator on 31 October 2011.

We thank Ms Thomas for her outstanding job and her invaluable contribution to the community.
