IOT Community Development Grants Programme Delivered

Media Release

06 June 2014

The Australian Government is delivering over $1.4 million in community infrastructure funding to support the growth of the Indian Ocean Territories communities.

The Indian Ocean Territories Community Development Grants Programme, released today, delivers 31 successful projects throughout the region.

Projects funded will support economic development and provide long term improvements in community infrastructure for the Territories of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

The programme delivers targeted projects which will strengthen economic development, increase productivity and create local jobs, improving islands' liveability.

The programme delivers important community infrastructure, including but not limited to:

  • $300,000 for the arts and cultural projects, including support for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands' Self-Determination Day and the 100 year anniversary of the Sydney-Emden naval battle, as well as support for Christmas Island's historic outdoor cinema;
  • $270,000 for education, the environment and emergency services, including new equipment for St John Ambulance Service, upgrades to the Christmas Island Golf Club and Kung Fu Association facilities, as well funding to support regular sailing regattas on the Cocos (Keelings) Islands.
  • $580,000 to support improved waste management facilities and practices, and culturally significant community events and festivals.

The Australian Government recognises the unique needs of the Indian Ocean Territories and is committed to supporting community organisations and small businesses for the long term.

This is the first time the community has provided feedback on local infrastructure priorities through the Indian Ocean Territories Regional Development Organisation.
