Darlington upgrade field investigations commence

Media Release

08 December 2014

Joint release with:

Stephen Mullighan

SA Minister for Transport and Infrastructure

The Australian and South Australian Governments are getting on with building world class infrastructure with soil and utility service investigation works for the Darlington Upgrade project getting underway on 6 December.

These investigation works are an important first step for the $620 million jointly funded Commonwealth and State funded project.

Results of the field investigations are expected to be complete by February 2015 and will be vital to the further planning and design development of the project.

The works will involve exploratory drilling holes on the road, verge and footpath area within the project site to obtain soil samples and locate utility services.

The Darlington Upgrade project will see the busy 2.3km section of Main South Road between the Southern Expressway and Ayliffes Road upgraded and represents one of the largest investments in South Australian roads.

The project will create approximately 370 jobs per annum throughout construction with every effort to be made to maximise the local employment opportunities for South Australians.

Major construction works are scheduled to commence in late 2015 with completion by end of 2018.

This is another example of the Australian and State Governments delivering on our shared plan to create new jobs and grow the South Australian economy so everyone can prosper.

The investigation works will be undertaken from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 7pm (weather permitting) at the following locations:

  • Main South Road (from Flagstaff Road to Celtic Avenue)
  • Sturt Road (from Shepherds Hill Road to Marion Road)
  • Ayliffes Road (from the Main South Road intersection to Norman Street)
  • Marion Road / Sturt Road intersection
  • Flinders Drive (200m section from Main South Road intersection)
  • Shepherds Hill Road (200m section from Ayliffes Road intersection)
  • Laffer Drive
  • Hugh Cairns Avenue

Speed and lane restrictions will be in place as required while the work is undertaken, with appropriate signage in place to advise road users.

For any concerns, question or for further information on these works please contact the project team on 1300 769 334 or email:
