Joint release with:

Michelle Landry

Federal Member for Capricornia

  • Three intersections upgraded north of Rockhampton at Atkinson Road, Raspberry Creek Road and Kooltandra Road
  • Dedicated turning lanes and a heavy vehicle stopping place at Kooltandra delivered
  • $5.2 million upgrade fully funded by the Australian Government

A $5.2 million investment by the Australian Government in making the Bruce Highway safer north of Rockhampton has delivered upgraded intersections at Atkinson Road, Raspberry Creek Road and Kooltandra Road.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the works were funded under the $106.4 million Bruce Highway—Curra to Sarina—Black Spots package, and praised Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry for her hard work in securing the funding.

“Michelle is a tireless champion for better roads, including the Bruce Highway, and she has been making sure these works were completed on time,” Mr Chester said.

“The project included the addition of protected turn lanes at all three intersections, which gets turning vehicles out of the way of highway traffic, making them safer for all drivers.”

Ms Landry said the new intersections and protected turn lanes were just one element of the upgrade works.

“A heavy vehicle stopping place was also built at Kooltandra to give truck drivers a dedicated place to pull over and rest,” Ms Landry said.

“The stretch of highway between Rockhampton and Sarina is notorious for its long straight stretches, so giving all drivers—including heavy vehicle operators—more places to pull over and refresh is an important part of making the highway safer.

“Driving these roads regularly, it is already evident that the upgrades are making a positive impact and providing a safer journey for all road users.”

The project was funded under the Australian Government’s $106.4 million Bruce Highway—Curra to Sarina—Black Spots package, which is part of the Australian Government’s Bruce Highway Upgrade Program.
