$13.6 million to fix 50 road 'black spots' in Victoria

Media Release

16 May 2017

  • Victoria allocated $13.6 million under latest Black Spot Programme funding
  • On average, black spot projects reduce fatal and injury crashes by 30 per cent
  • Government will spend $684.5 million on the programme from 2013–14 to 2020–21.

Fifty dangerous sections of road in Victoria will be upgraded to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists under a $13.6 million investment in the state's roads under the Coalition Government's Black Spots Programme.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester, alongside Member for Mallee and Chair of the Victorian Black Spot Consultative Panel Andrew Broad, today announced the 2017–18 allocation for the state under the Black Spot Programme.

“The Coalition Government is getting on with building safer roads right across the nation through our record $75 billion investment in infrastructure, with 2017–18 set to be the single largest Commonwealth infrastructure spend in our nation's history,” Mr Chester said.

“The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has found that, on average, Black Spot projects reduce fatal and injury crashes by 30 per cent, so every dollar we invest in safer roads helps to change lives and save lives.

“I'm passionate about reducing road trauma and the Black Spot Programme is a crucial part of improving the safety and efficiency of roads right around the country. By fixing and upgrading road locations where crashes are occurring through safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts, we are helping to make our local roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.”

Mr Broad said this latest investment in black spot projects would deliver safer roads in 31 local government areas throughout Victoria.

“The 50 black spot projects being funded across Victoria are an important contribution towards reducing the national road toll. Funding has been allocated to road locations that have been identified as high priority, with ten fatal and 221 injury crashes recorded at these sites,” Mr Broad said.

“Locally, we'll see $70,000 from the Government go to Mildura Rural City Council to help them upgrade the roundabout at Fourteenth Street and Etiwanda Avenue.”

The panel that reviews priorities for the programme includes representatives from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, the Victorian Transport Association, Victoria Police, the Municipal Association of Victoria and VicRoads.

The Australian Government has committed $684.5 million to the Black Spot Programme from 2013–14 to 2020–21 to improve road safety across the nation. For more information on the Australian Government's Black Spot Programme, or to nominate a black spot, visit
