Two overtaking lanes on the Bruce Highway near Kitty Creek and Carey's Creek north of Mackay are now open to traffic after construction finished this week.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the project showed the Australian Government was delivering on its commitment to improve driver safety on the Bruce Highway.
“Creating more and safer overtaking opportunities like these new lanes is part of our plan to improve the safety and efficiency of the highway over its entire length, through our $110 million Bruce Highway Overtaking Lanes Package,” Mr Chester said.
“Projects like this are a vital part of our work to improve road safety while increasing freight productivity across Queensland.”
“We will continue to deliver on our promise to improve the national road network, and drive down the trend in fatalities and serious injuries on Australian roads. The Bruce Highway upgrade projects are doing just that.”
Member for Dawson George Christensen said construction of the overtaking lanes had supported 21 jobs in the region, and welcomed their contribution to making the journey between Mackay and Proserpine safer and easier.
“These overtaking lanes will help drivers safely overtake the many slow moving trucks, buses and caravans that travel this stretch of the Bruce Highway,” Mr Christensen said.
“The Bruce Highway is the backbone of coastal Queensland's regional economies. Keeping traffic moving, whether it's heavy vehicles, locals or tourists, underpins the success of all businesses and industries in our region.
“Keeping our drivers safe is just as important, and these new overtaking lanes are just two of the many safety improvements being rolled out on the Bruce Highway.
“We understand the need for overtaking lanes on the Bruce Highway which is why we are focussing on projects like this to improve the safety and capacity of our roads.”
The $6.5 million project was fully funded by the Australian Government.
