Fixing dangerous roads in the ACT
Some of the ACT's most dangerous roads are set for major safety upgrades over the next 12 months.
Assistant Minister for Roads and Transport, Scott Buchholz, and Senator for the ACT and Chair of the ACT Black Spot Consultative Panel, Zed Seselja, announced the $744,200 funding would continue the Government's critical investment in reducing fatalities, injuries and crashes across the Territory.
“Funding has been allocated to improve six road locations identified as high priority, with 31 casualty crashes recorded at these sites over the five years to 2016, including one crash involving a fatality,” Mr Buchholz said.
“It was a pleasure to join my Colleague, Senator Seselja, to see firsthand one of the locations to benefit here in the ACT from this investment, at the intersection of Hobart Avenue and National Circuit in Forrest.
Senator Seselja and said the panel responsible for reviewing priorities of the program included representatives from the National Capital Authority, Pedal Power, ACT Motorcycle Riders Association, Australasian College of Road Safety and Transport Canberra.
“At this intersection, a $180,000 investment will deliver stop controls at the intersection and upgrade pedestrian facilities,” Senator Seselja said.
“The national Black Spot Program targets roads where crashes are occurring, and reduces the risk by introducing safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations.”
“The Coalition Government has committed $744.5 million to the Black Spot Program from 2013–14 to 2021–22 to improve road safety across the nation.
“The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has found that, on average, Black Spot projects reduce the number of crashes causing death and injury by 30 per cent.”
