Mackay's rich history and bright future have come together in the heritage listed former Pioneer Shire Council building refurbishment that was opened today as part of the Mackay City Centre Public Realm Improvement project.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the Australian Government provided $8.83 million towards the refurbishment.
“The Mackay City Centre is a focal point for a rapidly growing region—revitalising and street-scaping the area helps create a sense of local identity to reflect Mackay's natural features,” Mr Truss said.
Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen today opened the completed heritage-listed Pioneer Shire Council Building refurbishment, a component of the City Centre Public Realm Improvement project.
“This historic building is now a showpiece and the parkland adjoining the Heritage-listed building has also been refreshed to provide much needed green space for locals and visitors to the area,” Mr Christensen said.
“Artworks created by local artists will be installed and more bicycle racks will be fitted to improve the liveability of the area.”
Mayor Mackay Regional Council Deirdre Comerford said the community had been consulted to develop the idea and concept of the Public Realm Improvement project to ensure that the project met the needs and aspirations of business and community.
“I'm pleased that the city centre is being updated to become a quality attraction for tourism and investment,” Cr Comerford said.
The Mackay Regional Council is also investing $8.83 million toward the Mackay City Centre Public Realm Improvement project, which started in July 2013.
The project is expected to finish by October this year.
