Government opens consultation on quieter business jets at Sydney Airport

The Australian Government is moving to encourage the use of newer, quieter and more efficient small business aircraft at Sydney Airport during the 11pm to 6am curfew. A proposal to remove older, noisier aircraft from the list of business jets permitted to land in Sydney during the curfew has been opened for public comment.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss announced the start of public consultation today at the Waypoint 2014 Conference in Canberra, the biggest aviation conference in Australia.

“The Coalition made an election commitment to review the list of business jets permitted to operate at Sydney Airport during the curfew,” Mr Truss said.

“The last time the list was updated was in 2005…and I was the Minister who updated it. Since then new and quieter aircraft have come on the market, but they are not permitted to land in Sydney during the curfew.

“Anthony Albanese as Minister never got around to updating the list to allow newer, quieter and more commercially viable planes to come to Sydney. Certainly it is time for an overhaul.

“The Coalition Government proposes to update the list of aircraft by allowing newer, quieter Chapter 4 aircraft models to operate during the curfew. Older, noisier aircraft currently on the list will no longer be able to land during the curfew after 2022.

“The existing provisions for Sydney are out-dated and, by definition, they only allow older, noisier aircraft to operate during the curfew. This will be an important signal for commercial operators to upgrade their fleets.

“The Australia Government is proposing to enhance protections for surrounding communities by introducing a stricter aircraft noise standard during the curfew, while also providing flexibility to business aviation about which aircraft can fly.

“The Australian Government is committed to maintaining the curfew hours of operation at Sydney Airport and the cap of 80 runway movements per hour established under the Sydney Airport Demand Management Act 1997 and the Sydney Airport Long Term Operating Plan.”

A similar process will be undertaken at Adelaide Airport where curfew restrictions also apply.
