Building New South Wales' Transport Infrastructure for the 21st Century

The Abbott Government has made a record $14.9 billion investment to build the infrastructure of the 21st Century for New South Wales.
The funds provided in the 2014–15 Federal Budget are part of the Government's Economic Action Strategy to build a strong, prosperous economy, boost productivity and create thousands of new jobs.
The Government's Infrastructure Investment Programme will provide economic benefits for New South Wales.
Congestion in our towns and cities costs the economy billions of dollars every year in lost productivity.
Better roads means less congestion, faster travel times and lower fuel costs.
The Abbott Government's investment in New South Wales will also improve freight transport linkages to key domestic and export markets.
New South Wales projects include:
- Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan: This includes upgrades to The Northern and Bringelly Roads, a new motorway from the M7 to The Northern Road and a $200 million local roads package
- Federal contribution: $2.9 billion
- Pacific Highway duplication: Completion of the upgrade of the Pacific Highway to a dual carriageway by the end of the decade.
- Federal contribution: $5.6 billion
- WestConnex: Construction of a 33km motorway linking Western and South-Western Sydney with the city, Kingsford Smith Airport and port precincts.
- Federal contribution: $1.5 billion plus a concessional loan of up to $2 billion
- Northern Sydney Freight Corridor: Capacity upgrades across the 155km rail corridor between Sydney and Newcastle to reduce congestion, improve freight capacity and passenger train reliability.
- Federal contribution $691.6 million
- NorthConnex: Construction of twin three-lane tunnels linking the M1 and the M2 Motorways.
- Federal contribution: $405 million
- M1 Productivity Package: Capacity improvements in four sections of the M1 Pacific Motorway.
- Federal contribution: $195.8 million
$6.6 billion of new investment across Australia is being fast-tracked in the Budget to build much-needed economic infrastructure. It includes $3.0 billion for New South Wales.
By working closely with the New South Wales Government and through new financing and delivery arrangements for projects such as WestConnex, we can invest in more productivity-enhancing projects and build them even faster.
Funding will also continue over the next six years for road maintenance, with $2.5 billion for Roads to Recovery and $565 million for Black Spots, in addition to our new $300 million Bridges Renewal Programme.
The funds for New South Wales make up the largest share of the Government's $50 billion infrastructure plan in the 2014–15 Budget.
The new Infrastructure Investment Programme will deliver $40.8 billion between 2013–14 and 2018–19, with a further commitment of $4.5 billion budgeted for 2019–20 onwards.
Despite the Budget mess left by Labor, the Abbott Government is embarking on a significant platform of projects to drive economic growth, slash travel times in our major cities and create thousands of jobs for a more productive future.
