Federal Member for Capricornia

Rockhampton Meals on Wheels will be able to extend its services to the local community thanks to the Australian Government delivering on its commitment to provide $300,000 towards a new kitchen.

The new facility was officially opened today by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss.

Mr Truss said the funding to Meals on Wheels Rockhampton was provided through the Australian Government's Community Development Grants Programme, established to help create viable local and regional economies.

“The Australian Government is committed to providing long term improvements in social and economic infrastructure for communities across the nation,” Mr Truss said.

“Around $314 million will be invested in almost 300 community projects across Australia under our Community Development Grants programme.”

Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said the funding for Rockhampton Meals on Wheels had provided a new purpose-designed  kitchen, covered delivery and loading area, administration space and a volunteers’ area.

“Providing this necessary infrastructure improves service delivery and helps meet the growing demand of Meals on Wheels in Rockhampton and the surrounding communities,” Ms Landry said.

“The new facilities mean the organisation can provide more meals to more elderly and disabled residents.

“Clients benefit from the healthy meals provided by Meals on Wheels, as well as the independence and interaction that comes with using the service.

“The project was jointly funded with Meals on Wheels Rockhampton which undertook an energetic fundraising programme and contributed more than $1 million to the project.”

The Rockhampton Regional Council donated the land for the new kitchen.
