$750,000 Boost to Gymnastic Facilities in Mackay

Media Release

WT086/2014

10 June 2014

Joint release with:

George Christensen

Member for Dawson

Mackay Gymnastics will be able to extend its programmes thanks to the Coalition Government delivering its election commitment of $750,000 to complete its new premises.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss visited Mackay Gymnastics Incorporated today alongside Member for Dawson George Christensen to deliver the good news in person.

Mr Truss said the funding will be provided through the Government's $314 million Community Development Grants Programme, established to create viable local and regional economies.

“The Coalition Government is committed to providing long term improvements in social and economic infrastructure for communities across the nation,” Mr Truss said.

“We will be supporting almost 300 community projects across Australia under the CDG programme.”

Mr Christensen said the Coalition Government's contribution would help the club provide top class training to gymnasts from Mackay and the wider region.

“This funding will help build extensions and additions to the relocated club's facilities, including a mezzanine floor, offices and amenities fit out,” Mr Christensen said.

“The new facilities will let the club extend its many programmes, such as those for schools, special needs and kindergym, as well as its artistic and recreational programmes.

“It will encourage more young people to get involved in gymnastics, which is a year-round ‘sun smart’ activity, and will attract more competitions to Mackay, providing job opportunities for gymnastic coaches and boosting the local economy.”
