Coalition Invests $9 Million in Regional Airstrip Upgrades

The Australian Government will invest more than $8.9 million over the next two years under the Regional Aviation Access Programme for infrastructure upgrades to 39 remote airstrips across Australia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said remote communities across Australia—from Bathurst Island in the north to Flinders Island in the south and from Walgett in the east to Halls Creek in the west—will share in the funding.

“The funding will provide essential safety and access upgrades, including repairing and upgrading runways, constructing animal-proof perimeter fencing, installing runway lighting and upgrading drainage,” Mr Truss said.

“Projects range from large investments worth up to $850,000 at Ernabella in South Australia and $786,000 at Flinders Island in Tasmania, to smaller but no less important upgrades like $30,000 to reseal the apron at Brewarrina in New South Wales and a $42,000 perimeter fence at Augathella in Queensland.

“These upgrades will assist communities in meeting the aviation safety obligations required to ensure the continuation of air services, such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Australia Post, freight and other air transport services.

“Local airstrips are vital in the delivery of essential goods and services to remote communities, including medical care. They also connect remote communities with each other and provide residents with access to work and education opportunities.

“With vast distances spanning our continent, safe and fully functioning airstrips are often the only reliable means of transport.

“Given smaller aircraft often service these communities, simple but effective measures like providing smooth runways or keeping wildlife away can make all the difference in a safe landing.

“These investments are part of the Australian Government's commitment to regional and remote communities and to improving the nation's infrastructure.”
