Joint release with:
Federal Senator for Queensland
Commissioning of the Cardwell Range realignment on the Bruce Highway will deliver a much safer and efficient roadway through the notorious range section.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the upgraded highway will increase safety and efficiency for drivers using this vital route between Townsville and Cairns.
“The realignment will reduce travel times between Townsville and Cairns and improve overall safety conditions for all drivers and their passengers. It also continues our commitment to ease congestion and improve efficiency,” Mr Truss said.
“Freight companies will also see the benefits of straighter and flatter roads, reduced business costs and improved productivity.”
North Queensland based Senator Ian Macdonald attended the ceremony and said the upgrades were beneficial to locals and travellers alike.
“The new overtaking lanes will keep traffic moving at a steady pace while the overpass removes a dangerous level crossing at Rungoo,” Senator Macdonald said.
“The new access bridge to Hinchinbrook Lookout also removes a series of dangerous right turns.”
The Cardwell Range realignment passes through the World Heritage listed Girringun National Park, so environmental protection was a major focus during construction.
The Australian Government committed funding of $128.5 million and the Queensland Government $38.5 million to complete this vital piece of infrastructure for Queensland.
