Darren Chester MP

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester and Minister for Major Projects, Paul Fletcher, today met with Victorian Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan in Canberra.

“We had a positive and productive meeting,” Mr Chester said.

“The Commonwealth and Victorian Governments recognise the infrastructure challenges facing Melbourne and regional Victoria.

“The business case for Melbourne Metro Rail proposal has been sent to Infrastructure Australia, which will now proceed to evaluate the Melbourne Metro Project business case.

“In addition, I have asked Minister Allan to provide me with details on other projects that can unlock the potential of regional Victoria and create jobs and economic opportunities.”

Minister Fletcher welcomed the Victorian Government's commitment to the Commonwealth's recently released Principles for Innovative Financing.

“We had a useful discussion about the potential for value capture on Melbourne Metro Rail and I look forward to the Victorian Government providing us with further analysis,” Mr Fletcher said

Minister Fletcher said the Turnbull Government had a clear process to follow when considering whether it would provide funding to major infrastructure projects.

“Only once Infrastructure Australia has completed its assessment will the Turnbull Government be in a position to consider the proposal and whether it will provide funding to the Melbourne Metro—how much and in what form—grant, loan, equity commitment or other,” he said.
