Vital upgrades to the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre will ensure the indoor facility will be ready in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the Australian Government has committed $4.99 million towards the upgrade of the Entertainment and Convention Centre.

“Funding for the refurbishment is being provided under the Community Development Grants Programme which is providing almost $350 million to community projects across Australia,” Senator Nash said.

“The refurbishment will ensure that Townsville can fulfil its role as a host for international basketball matches during the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“Queensland is preparing to host the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade. The Australian Government is working closely with the Queensland Government to ensure all Queenslanders benefit from this massive event and the legacy it will leave for the State.”

Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones said the upgrade of the Entertainment and Convention Centre will ensure Townsville gets international exposure and reaps the economic benefits that come with it.

“Townsville is being promoted to national sporting teams as an ideal destination for pre-training for the Commonwealth Games. If successful, the drive is expected to generate significant economic and social benefits for the greater Townsville region,” Mr Jones said.

“The completed project is anticipated to sustain the region's capacity to stage major entertainment events, business and trade conventions and attract further clients by providing a facility that exceeds current industry practices and operational standards.

“Installation of new air-conditioning chillers for the Centre started today as part of 10 packages of works which includes replacement works and structural and amenity upgrades.

“The completed project will ensure the Entertainment and Convention Centre can function viably as a basketball venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.”

The Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre capacity will remain at 5000 following the upgrade.

The refurbishment project commenced in April 2015 and is expected to be completed in February 2017.
