Eastern Park residents gathered today for the official opening of the newly refurbished Eastern Park Football Club.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the Australian Government provided $200,000 towards the $652,000 infrastructure upgrade.

“Through the Community Development Grants Programme the Australian Government is providing almost $350 million to community projects like this one across the country,” Senator Nash said.

“The Australian Government is committed to funding community projects that have a longer term positive impact on the social and economic infrastructure of communities.

“Within the electorate of Wakefield there is a further Community Development Grants project soon to be rolled out—the Playford Central Business District Infrastructure project to which the Australian Government is providing funding of up to $2.75 million.”

Senator for South Australia Sean Edwards joined the local community for the official opening and said the newly refurbished Eastern Park Football Club will provide the community with a vibrant and functional multipurpose precinct.

“The project will provide greater usage of the facility for either football, netball, cricket, darts and other community user groups,” Senator Edwards said.

“Having the new facilities in place will help promote sports and healthy lifestyles within the community.”

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said the newly refurbished clubrooms will now include a new extended dining room, extended spectator veranda, fully equipped commercial kitchen, new entrance, improved access ramps, lighting, new accessible toilet and an external secure storeroom.

“The refurbishment is truly impressive and will play a huge role in supporting the Club to meet the needs of their players now, and into the future,” Mayor Docherty said.

“Supporting our community to achieve victories, as well as encouraging young people to get involved in grassroots football, is incredibly important to the City of Playford.

“City of Playford is committed to investing in our local sporting facilities.”

The Eastern Park Football Extension and Refurbishment was a jointly funded project with the Australian Government providing $200,000 and the City of Playford $452,000.
