Visiting Norfolk Island

Media Release

MM125/2018

21 July 2018

This Tuesday I will be heading over to Norfolk Island for my first visit as Federal Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government.

It'll be a busy few days and I hope to meet with as many people as possible to hear exactly what you, the community want to see happen on the Island in the future. As a regional Queenslander, I am passionate about supporting and representing Australians in rural and remote communities.

During my visit I'll be catching up with the Norfolk Island Regional Council including Mayor Robin Adams and General Manager, Lotta Jackson.

I can see they've been working really hard for the Norfolk Island community and as Minister, I'm really looking forward to continuing our constructive work together to make sure Norfolk Island continues to be a great place to live both now and into the future.

Norfolk Island is a really unique place and I have really fond memories of visiting as a young boy when my father was Minister for Territories.

One of my favourite places to visit is the World Heritage Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area site. It's clear the Norfolk Island community really values this site which is why I'll be paying a visit to get a better understanding of how the community uses the site, its economic potential and future investment needs.

The Coalition Government will invest $38.7 million into Norfolk Island over the next four years. This will give the community access to the services they need and will help to maintain important infrastructure such as roads, the local school, the health facility and the new community centre. I'll be paying a visit to these places and will be happy to chat with locals about what further work they'd like to see happen.

One of my priorities is making sure children, young people and families have support, are safe and have access to the important wellbeing services on the Island.

Throughout my three day trip I'll cover a broad range of topics and meet many people. However I unfortunately won't be able to meet everyone this time around, which is why I encourage community members to contact the Administrator, Mr Eric Hutchinson, as the Coalition Government's representative on Norfolk Island. Eric's door is always open, and anyone interested in the Government's programs and services should contact his office by emailing Office.Administrator@infrastructure.gov.au or phoning +6723 22152.
