Mayor of the City of Darwin

Nigel Scullion

Senator for Northern Territory

  • Stage one of Parap Pool Redevelopment opens in Darwin
  • First stage includes a 50-metre competition-standard pool and 25-metre multipurpose pool
  • The Australian Government invested $4.48 million in the project

Swimmers in the Northern Territory now have a new 50-metre FINA compliant pool to train and compete in, following the comprehensive redevelopment of Darwin's Parap pool.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the new Parap Pool will accommodate both competitive athletes and community members.

“In addition to the 50-metre International Swimming Federation (FINA) standard pool, which will help develop local sporting talent, the facility will have a 25-metre multipurpose pool for casual swimmers to use,” Dr McVeigh said.

“With the Commonwealth Games just around the corner, world class facilities in Parap may help unearth the next Olympic champion like Leisel Jones.”

Senator for Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said the project provides a modern, integrated aquatic centre, which provides much-needed relief from Darwin's heat.

“Right now we have difficulty in retaining and attracting skilled sporting staff to live and stay in Darwin. This new facility will provide a much more attractive proposition for the Northern Territory sports industry,” Senator Scullion said.

Lord Mayor of the City of Darwin Kon Vatskalis said the Parap Pool Redevelopment of boosts the leisure and sports facilities in the Greater Darwin region.

“The FINA-compliant pool place not only Darwin, but the Territory, firmly on the map for national competitions,” Lord Mayor Vatskalis said.

The Coalition Government invested $4.483 million in the project, with the Northern Territory Government providing $5 million and the City of Darwin provided $5.486 million.
