The start of works are imminent on a new five-level art gallery which will showcase local talent and attract art-savvy tourists to the region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack joined Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum and Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie to visit the site of the new Shepparton Art Museum.

“Once complete, this museum will be among Australia’s top art galleries, showcasing the region’s diverse cultural communities as well as contemporary and international exhibitions. The new Art Museum will make a huge contribution to the region’s economy, creating 180 jobs during construction and 20 ongoing roles for the community,” Mr McCormack said.

Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum said the gallery would be a fully accessible public space to bring together community groups, visitors, students and investors to make their own mark on Shepparton.

“We know tourists make the effort to travel to a quality art gallery and this institution will act as an entry point into the gorgeous Victoria Park Lake Precinct. The rooftop bar on top of the gallery will be the best spot in town to take in the beautiful Goulburn River Red Gum Reserve,” Mr Drum said.

Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said this was a major investment in the region, incorporating a sculpture forecourt, a community arbour, an art hill and even performance spaces.

“I am sure the Shepparton Art Museum will be a huge benefit to the local region and will lead to an even greater art and culture hub for years to come,” Senator McKenzie said.

Mayor for Greater Shepparton City Council Kim O’Keeffe said the exciting project positions Greater Shepparton as a progressive region not only in the arts world but as a tourism destination.

“Developments such as these instil confidence amongst business that Shepparton is growing and prepared for the future and will attract new investment to the area,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

The project is jointly funded by the Coalition Government investing $10 million, the Victorian Government $10 million, Greater Shepparton City Council $15.35 million and the SAM Foundation $4.5 million.
